Caught

I only meant to sit for a minute,
but I leaned back and
felt the breeze skip over my skin and ruffle my hair.
I closed my eyes and felt the sun's early morning light
warming the back of the chair.

It was all over after that;
the chair kept calling me back,
first to finish--the rest of the coffee, the last chapters of the book.
The sun crept around the corner of the house
to finish warming my winter-chilled toes.

Later I found myself in the chair again;
it wasn't planned, but it happened anyway,
this time to start--the next book, the first of the summer ice cream cones.
The breeze danced across the porch,
tempering the heat of afternoon sun.

I only meant to sit for a minute,
but I leaned back and
slowly but surely, between the warm sun and gentle breeze
pieces of a whole day slid by in that chair
at the end of the porch.

  1. Sounds like heaven...the perfect way to spend the summer. Moving from one thing to the next but taking the time to enjoy your chair...and all it has to offer. I really enjoyed this.

  2. Oh that warm sun, a breeze, a book and a porch with a comfy chair, what a wonderful way to spend a day. I hope you have many more.

  3. Perfection! This is what summer is all about in my eyes! Great descriptions and usage of phrases: the sun crept around the corner of the house, the breeze danced across the porch. . . just perfection!

  4. this is the best kind of "caught" i can think of! This happens to me too, but at night. All of a sudden, I will look at the clock and most of my sleeping hours have turned into reading hours!

  5. It's lovely poem to capture your kidnapping! It must be some chair, & some place.

  6. I like your friendship with the chair. And the chair was happy.
    Beautiful writing.

  7. I, too, have a chair that catches me. I even bought a chair just like it for my mom's porch when I had to stay there for 10 days to dog-sit. I am considering bringing a chair like it to my dad's lake house, even though there are so many chairs here already. There is just something about my plastic adirondack. Clearly, I have been caught by your words about your chair!

  8. I want to get caught by that chair on your porch! Your descriptive word choices brought this to life. The personification! The sun crept...I could see it, tiptoeing up behind you, a big smile, knowing the pleasure it would bring you...all from one little verb. Wow. I'm so glad you are my friend and I get to read this writing.
